Risk management tool

One of the biggest fears for traders is losing money due to an incorrect market prediction. That’s why a solid risk management strategy is a key part of successful trading. One way to control losses is by setting up auto-close levels (Take Profit / Stop Loss), which automatically lock in profit or limit losses without the trader needing to monitor the position constantly.

Problem

Auto-close settings didn’t support effective risk management

The current auto-close settings didn’t align with the common standards used by margin traders. They were difficult to manage, limiting a trader’s ability to control their risks effectively.

Research

Analysis of the existing solution

During competitor research, I identified key entry points and common patterns for setting up auto-close that traders are already familiar with:

  • The ability to set auto-close levels before opening a trade.

  • The ability to set auto-close levels before opening a trade.

  • The ability to set auto-close levels before opening a trade.

  • The ability to adjust auto-close settings for open positions both in the portfolio and directly on the chart.

  • The ability to adjust auto-close settings for open positions both in the portfolio and directly on the chart.

  • The ability to adjust auto-close settings for open positions both in the portfolio and directly on the chart.

Next, I evaluated how well the existing interface met these standards. While the current solution provided similar entry points to competitor platforms, each of them required significant improvements.

Entry points for auto-close settings in the current solution

Solution

1. Auto-close settings before opening a trade

The auto-close feature includes two options:

  • Automatically closing a trade when a certain profit level is reached

  • Automatically closing a trade when a certain profit level is reached

  • Automatically closing a trade when a certain profit level is reached

  • Automatically closing a trade when a certain loss level is reached

  • Automatically closing a trade when a certain loss level is reached

  • Automatically closing a trade when a certain loss level is reached

Traders can use these options separately or together, depending on their strategy. However, the existing auto-close setup had several issues.

What needed to be fixed?

A single display field for both options

Since both values were shown in the same field, there wasn’t enough space to display them properly, making it difficult to read the exact numbers.

Since both values were shown in the same field, there wasn’t enough space to display them properly, making it difficult to read the exact numbers.

To solve this, I separated the auto-close settings into two distinct fields. This allowed traders to focus on one task at a time and configure only what they needed.

What improved?

Clear display of set values

Now, trader can see exactly which option is enabled and its exact value. No rounding, no cut-off numbers.

More intuitive settings panel

When adjusting the price level for auto-close, trader can immediately see the corresponding profit/loss in money, and vice versa.

2. Auto-close settings on the chart

Research showed that the easiest way to set auto-close levels is directly on the price chart. Many competitors already offer this feature, and traders are familiar with how it works.

The existing implementation in the trading terminal needed major improvements.

What needed to be fixed?

No option to set an auto-close level for losses

The system only allowed traders to set a Take Profit level, completely ignoring the need to limit losses.

No way to set the exact value right away

By default, auto-close was set to trigger at 50% profit, requiring extra steps to adjust it to the trader’s preference.

To solve these issues, I introduced draggable sliders on the chart. Now, traders can quickly adjust auto-close levels by simply dragging them to the desired value. I also improved the overall design of the auto-close component on the chart.

What improved?

Both profit and loss auto-close levels can be set

Traders can now adjust their auto-close settings directly on the chart and visually assess their risk management strategy.

Improved auto-close component on the chart

The component now clearly shows both the price level and the corresponding profit/loss in currency. Additionally, traders can remove an auto-close level if needed.

3. Auto-close settings in the portfolio

I also made updates to the auto-close settings in the portfolio. You can read more about them in the Trading Portfolio case study.

Results

Thanks to the improved auto-close settings, managing risk has become much easier and more intuitive:

  • Clear and precise values – Traders can now see the exact numbers they’ve set, with no rounding or cut-off values, ensuring full transparency.
